
Defending champions RB Leipzig beat Hoffenheim 3-1 on Wednesday to reach the quarter-finals of the German Cup in a match overshadowed by a medical emergency involving a fan.
Emil Forsberg opened the scoring in the eighth minute at the left post, and Konrad Laimer made it 2-0 in the 41st minute when he turned away from a defender and fired a low shot into the far left corner.
Kasper Dolberg revived Hoffenheim’s hopes with a 76th-minute header, but Germany striker Timo Werner sealed things with six minutes remaining. Hoffenheim’s Stanley Nsoki was sent off shortly after for a second bookable offence.
The mood was subdued as supporters refrained from chanting and chanting after the news that a fan had collapsed in the stadium entrance before the match started.
“One fan attending the match had to be revived before kick-off and was taken to hospital. Our prayers are with them,” the club tweeted.
Leipzig have extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 17 games, while Hoffenheim are winless in nine games.
Record cup winners Bayern Munich were playing in Mainz on Wednesday, looking for their first win of the year after three Bundesliga draws.
Union Berlin and VfB Stuttgart reached the round of 16 on Tuesday, with the remaining four bottom 16 matches being played next week.
