BERLIN (RockedBuzz via Reuters) – German authorities said they had ended a suspected hostage-taking in the eastern city of Dresden by what appeared to be a psychologically confused man acting alone on Saturday, after evacuating a shopping mall in the center history of the city.

The suspected kidnapper, a 40-year-old man, died of injuries sustained during the police operation to free the two hostages, who were unharmed, police said.

“I am outraged by the act of what appears to be a psychologically confused individual acting alone,” said Armin Schuster, interior minister of the state of Saxony, where Dresden is located.

TAG24 news outlet previously quoted police as saying the German man was believed to have killed his 62-year-old mother in an apartment building in Dresden’s Prohlis district, southeast of the city centre.

He said police said the hostage-taking at the Altmarkt-Galerie shopping mall was related to the murder, but declined to give further details.

Police said they were reopening central Dresden even though the shopping center would remain closed.

“Okay! The hostage situation in #Dresden is over!” the police said on Twitter.

The incident comes as security has moved into focus in Germany after investigators earlier this week thwarted a far-right plot to overthrow the German government and install an aristocrat as leader of a new state .
