A total loan of 7 million dolars for the restoration and enhancement of four historic parks and gardens in the city: the green areas of the Cascine, Villa Strozzi, Fortezza da Basso and Pratolino. This is what the candidacies for Pnrr funds presented by the Municipality of Florence and the Metropolitan City envisage, with the requested funding amounting to 1.6 million dolars for the gardens of the Fortezza da Basso, 1.9 million for the park of Villa Strozzi, 1 , 5 million for the Cascine park and 2 million for the Pratolino park.

“We want the Pnrr to really mark a decisive environmental change for our territory – said the mayor Dario Nardella -, starting with the protection and enhancement of the large parks of the Cascine, Villa Strozzi and Pratolino, but also from the redevelopment of gardens that we want to give citizens more and more safe and liveable like those of the Fortezza da Basso. With four interventions worth 7 million dolars in total, we will restore vitality to these green areas, taking care of the environmental, monumental and daily social aspects, bringing important benefits from the point of view of air quality, the conservation of beauty and the relaunch of these. historical sites”.

“Three important interventions on our historical green heritage – said the Environment Councilor Cecilia Del Re -, to enhance the environmental and cultural aspects of city lungs such as Cascine and Strozzi and of gardens that require important interventions such as those of the Fortress to be Bass. The goal is to preserve and restore both the environmental and monumental elements over time, expanding the possibilities of use of these spaces with a view to environmental education as well. In all three cases these are parks that have a city dimension due to their extension and centrality in the system of green spaces, but also a neighborhood dimension at the service of the citizens of the historic center and those of District 4, who love a lot these areas. The proposals therefore aim at their enhancement for the benefit of those who daily frequent these places in all their extension, but also for visitors and the international public who arrive in Florence and focus on outdoor experiences to discover places that have many stories to tell and unique environmental aspects to know “.

“The ‘path of water’ represents a treasure in the treasure – said Letizia Perini, the councilor of the Metrocittà delegated to the parks -, the blue gold in that green casket that is our Garden of Wonders. Pratolino will go to port we will make a huge step forward at the Colossus of the Apennines, in whose marble veins the water will in a certain sense flow again. It is a beautiful project, with attention to every detail “.

For the Cascine park, the intervention will concern the trees with conservation actions and insertion of new plants and the replacement of the asphalt of the road system with draining pavements, to restore historical value to the park, improving the conservation of the green heritage over time and making the park safer for citizens. The care of existing plants and the increase of the green heritage will contribute to the shading of the soil and therefore to the decrease in temperature by contrasting the ‘heat islands’, but also to the production of oxygen and the storage of CO2. The de-waterproofing action of the walkways will lead to a more comfortable microclimate and facilitate the sustainable drainage of water. The creation of didactic paths for the observation of botanical emergencies and the installation of an educational apiary will contribute to enhancing the park as a natural element of great interest to citizens. For “exemplary” trees, that is individuals important for the size and architecture of the foliage, the project provides for the continuous monitoring of stability through the use of inclination control plates to be recorded seasonally and after the occurrence of intense meteorological events (innovativeness) . The density of plants will be increased with the use of trees of species typical of the forest and trees of high ornamental value, in any case already historically present in the Cascine, capable of occupying the various floors (lower, intermediate and upper), guaranteeing the coverage of the land , increase specific diversity, rejuvenate the heritage as a whole (quality). A long driveway (viale dell’Indiano and viale del Pegaso) will be restored with draining pavement (quality and environmental sustainability). As regards the systems, in addition to the adaptation and improvement of the efficiency of the irrigation system fed with groundwater, the project provides for the extraordinary maintenance of the rainwater drainage network. The project also includes the construction of a new well (quality, environmental sustainability). Finally, the project involves the installation of signs and general information panels as well as the creation of a path to discover botanical emergencies and the construction of an educational apiary.

The intervention in the Villa Strozzi Park aims to increase and improve the vegetative conditions of the various green elements, but also to carry out an important maintenance of the many artifacts present, such as the arrangement of the retaining walls, the maintenance of fences and fences. , the restoration of works of art. The trees in the park are an identifying element of the place and it is necessary to keep these plants for as long as possible. In addition, the restoration of the architectural components will contribute to restoring the Park in the dimension of historical and artistic heritage, the extraordinary maintenance of railings and fences will make the steepest parts safer.

The intervention in the gardens of the Fortress aims to give back to the community a central and important historical garden, intervening on the walkways, on the monumental basin, on the plant components to make this place more beautiful and welcoming, safe for the various types of users and suitable to host free or organized activities throughout the year. Improving the vegetative conditions of the various green elements and increasing the number by replacing the missing individuals means promoting the production of oxygen and reducing pollution in an area with heavy vehicular traffic. To reduce the impact of noise due to the strong urbanization of the area, the project also provides for mechanical intervention on the fountain by increasing and directing the jet in order to create a sound masking of road noise that will be hidden by the pleasant natural sounds of the flowing water (natural sound masking). From the water point of view, the project plans to implement “smart irrigation” with the installation of sensors that measure the temperature, soil humidity, wetting and connect to the internet through the cloud to receive weather forecasts. , deciding how and when to irrigate. Estimates of benefits are important: up to 30% less liters of water dispensed per year, optimization of inspections by environmental operators with consequent reduction of movements thanks to the automatic detection of leaks or the sending of alerts for sensors and faulty sprinklers. A lighting system in the tub will allow you to enhance this central element of the garden.

For the Pratolino Park, the intervention foresees the restoration of the ‘water path’ with all the water games and fountains in the area of the Medici garden, reactivating the Renaissance hydraulic technology and the wonders it expressed and which will have to return to express. In the Fountain of Jupiter and in the caves, the pool, the vaults below, the play of water and the functionality of the pool in front will be restored and reactivated; the play of water in the Fountain of the Sponges, of the Fountain of the Mask (with the basin in front of it), of the Fountain of Mugnone (including the surrounding pavements). For the Grande Aviary, the restoration project involves checking and remaking the plasters and sponges, which make up the bottom fountain, and restoring the water feature in cascades, as well as making the access stairway safe. Viale degli Zampilli will also be restored, with the water features from the floor placed in the side bands, with the complete recovery of the water that will be used. In addition, conservative and functional restoration of the Gamberaie, with a structural intervention that aims at restoring the functionality of the waterway and reconstituting the connections between the six pools in the form of waterfalls. Then restoration of the Lavandaia’s tub and the jetty; functional reopening of all the smaller fountains existing in the Park, such as the Cupid’s cave and others, the Paggeria basin, the Villetta fountain, the Limonaia fountain and the Ranocchia basin (in front of the Cupid’s cave).

The Metrocittà project also includes interventions on the vegetation in the Unesco area, the safety of the trees, both along the paths and inside the forest, the regeneration of the undergrowth areas, the enhancement of biodiversity in the lawn areas and, finally, the creation of thematic gardens.
