Syrian Kurds took to the streets in the city of Qamishli, in the far north of the country, along the border with Turkey.

They fear that Ankara, which already occupies many Kurdish-majority areas in northern Syria, could launch another military ground operation in the area.

Indeed, on Friday the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, again referred to the creation of a “safe zone” in northern Syria, which would mean extending Ankara’s occupation to more areas.

Tensions are rising after Turkey launched a wave of air strikes against Kurdish positions in Syria last week. Ankara has intervened in response to an attack in Istanbul that killed six people, with Turkey holding various Kurdish groups responsible.
