Half of Germany’s 16 states will not enforce the standard Sunday driving ban for trucks, citing the need to move goods ahead of a nationwide strike by transport unions.

Hauliers, retailers and Transport Minister Volker Wissing had lobbied for such a move.

The driving ban for lorries with a gross weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes is otherwise valid all year round on Sundays from 12.00 to 22.00.

The ban will not apply in: Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, Baden-Württemberg and Saxony-Anhalt.

The massive transport strike planned in Germany for Monday will lock down much of the country.

The action will affect rail services, public transport, waterways, ports and motorways across large parts of the country, as well as all airports outside Berlin.
