Dogs recognize different languages: the incredible discovery – RB

Dog brains are so developed that they can sense when a person is speaking in a language other than the one they are used to

Fidelity, great resistance to fatigue and knowledge of a large number of languages. It is not the curriculum vitae of the perfect candidate, but the main characteristics that can boast the dogs of all the world. We already knew about their great affection and continuous desire for movement, while the fact that they were polyglots is something new. This is the result of a study recently published in the journal N$Image . A group of Hungarian scientists, to be precise researchers from the Ethology Department of the “Eötvös Loránd” University of Budapest , they focused on the brain functioning of 18 all fours while listening to different languages.

The conclusion was surprising: man’s best friend can easily recognize many languages , managing to guess the sounds and quickly get used to the differences. The dogs involved in the experiment had to go through what is better known as “brain imaging analysis” . As pointed out by the researchers, since humans can understand various languages, there was a need to do the same with animals. The latter were subjected to a sort of brain “scanner” while listening to some phrases from an immortal tale such as “The Little Prince”. Saint-Exupéry’s masterpiece has been read in both Spanish and Hungarian.

A very specific brain activity

Magyar was obviously the most recognizable language for dogs and it was decided to test them with phrases in a totally unknown language . Furthermore, just to liven up the experiment further, the pets listened to a series of unnatural sounds and that did not belong to any particular language. These small obstacles served to clarify whether the dogs were capable of detecting speech or not. Based on the words, brain activity was different. Familiar sounds did not make the brain work for long, unlike what happened with others never heard before.

Differences linguistic

Among the co-authors of the article on this canine ability is Raul Hernandez-Perez who added other interesting details about it. In practice, the brains of these animals can distinguish a series of real sentences from those that are not linguistic and make sense. There is also a very strong temptation, that of associating dogs with the possibility of grasping the various differences between one language compared to another. In any case, confirmations in this sense will be needed before having absolute certainties, even if the results are already fascinating from a scientific point of view .

The Hungarian study perfectly matches another not very different one. The same Hungarian university focused on the linguistic intelligence of the four legs, arriving at the conclusion of a behavior similar to that of children to learn words. When we humans are small, we can distinguish the typical patterns of the syllables that form the words, then recognizing the sound and finally the meaning. The same do the best friends of man who were subjected to another experiment some time ago to formalize the incredible similarity . Can that bark does not sleep and above all he knows how to make his brain work!
