Liverpool striker Diogo Jota has urged the Reds to follow up Monday night’s 6-1 defeat of Leeds in the Premier League with a steady run of performances and results that could still give them a chance to finish the season in the top four.

Jurgen Klopp’s side stayed eighth after the win, their first since beating Manchester United 7-0 in early March, and lie nine points behind fourth-placed Newcastle with eight games remaining.

On only one occasion this season have Liverpool combined more than two consecutive Premier League victories. Even then, the four-game winning streak in November and December was split by the World Cup break. Whenever the Reds have won two games in a row, they have failed to win a third.

That problem with consistency set them back.

“I think this season we’ve had great results, great wins and we haven’t really followed that up. So let’s hope that this time we can run and win practically every game,” said Jota, who scored his first two Premier League goals in one season injured. LiverpoolFC.com after the Leeds match.

“We have to believe it,” he said of the first four. “Even if it is possible, we have to believe in it. But we can only do that by winning games. Of course, today was a step in the right direction.”

Liverpool they have not missed out on the Champions League since eighth place in 2015/16, Klopp’s first season in charge before a major squad rebuild.

Jota had gone a full year without scoring in the Premier League before Monday night, last netting in a 2-2 draw with Manchester City in April 2022. But he hopes his brace at Elland Road will bring confidence and personal momentum .

“I think it was even a bit last season, I haven’t scored in the last few games,” he admitted.

“This season is really, really tough, dealing with injuries. Now I’m trying to get that momentum and games like today will definitely help me.”
