Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement about deploying tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus is dangerous and irresponsible, the North Atlantic Alliance said on Sunday.

“Russia’s nuclear rhetoric is dangerous and irresponsible. NATO is alert and we are closely monitoring the situation,” said the statement of the alliance’s press secretary Oana Lungescu.

It said the alliance had not seen “any changes in the deployment of Russian nuclear forces that would require us to change the deployment of our nuclear forces.”

“Russia has consistently violated its arms control commitments, the most recent being the suspension of participation in the New START Treaty,” the statement said.

“Russia must resume its commitments and act honestly,” the statement emphasized.

It has already been reported that Putin announced in a televised interview broadcast on Saturday that Russia will deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.

The US National Security Council said Washington did not believe Russia was going to use nuclear weapons.

Ukraine has requested to convene an emergency session of the UN Security Council.

As Russia’s renewed invasion of Ukraine continues for more than a year, there are growing concerns about the possible use of nuclear weapons.
