Delta variant: China faces its strongest wave of contaminations in months

The country had controlled the coronavirus epidemic . While China has been experiencing a return to almost normal since the spring 2020 – two deaths linked to Covid having officially been recorded since that date – a resurgence worried cases. Beijing reported on Saturday an explosion in the number of contaminations, attributed to the variant Delta, now present in 14 provinces.

The country has thus identified 328 new cases of infection in July. If this figure may seem low, it is nevertheless almost equal to the period from February to June. “The main strain circulating now is the Delta variant, which represents an even more difficult challenge in terms of prevention and control”, explained the spokesperson for the National Health Commission (NHC) during a point press Saturday.

Appeared at Nanjing airport earlier this month, to nine employees responsible for cleaning the cabin of a plane from Russia, the variant quickly spread in other parts of the country. A speed linked in particular to the peak of the tourist season, with intensive use of air transport by the Chinese.

Reconfinements and massive screenings In response, the authorities have put in place strict measures to try to curb the increase in cases. Hundreds of thousands of people are now confined in Jiangsu Province, of which Nanjing is the capital, which ordered the closure of all attractions and cultural venues on Saturday. At the same time, the city subjected its 9.2 million inhabitants to two screenings.

The tourist town of Zhangjiajie, in Hunan province, where a handful of people positive for coronavirus attended a theatrical performance, confined its 1.5 million inhabitants. All tourist attractions have been closed there since Friday. In the suburbs of Beijing, where two patients were discovered, 20. 1336139. people were placed in confinement on Thursday. These are the first local cases recorded in Beijing, whose metropolitan area has more than 19 million inhabitants, for six months .

Finally in Zhengzhou, in Henan province recently affected by deadly floods, the discovery of a first asymptomatic case led on Saturday to the launch of a vast testing campaign for the 000 millions of inhabitants of the city.

Preventive effect of the vaccine After learning that some patients had been vaccinated, the health authorities Chinese said it was “normal” and reiterated the importance of vaccination and strict measures.

“Due to the Delta variant, vaccine protection may have somewhat decreased, but the current vaccine still has a good preventive and protective effect against the Delta variant, ”said Feng Zijian, a virologist at the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The most populous country in the world has already administered 1.6 billion doses (only “made in China”) but without specifying how many inhabitants were fully vaccinated.
