Installing Mods In Minecraft: A Pre-Installation Checklist
Before you start looking for mods to download and install (not least because you don’t have to, we have a nice list of cool mods here), we encourage you to follow this list of security checks. This will ensure that your game is as optimized as possible to install mods and play with them.
Make sure your game is the latest version. Downloading and installing mods in Minecraft requires a lot of digital work, like moving files around, changing filenames (and sometimes extensions), and downloading additional programs. You can make sure your version of Minecraft is the latest, or you may need to purchase a more recent version of the game if needed. We do not guarantee the operation of mods as it depends on the work of the content creator.
Make sure what you are doing on your PC. If you share your PC with someone else, ask their permission first before modifying or modifying files. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with it, you will struggle to install most Minecraft mods. See what you are going to do and make sure you get it before moving on. You have been warned.
What’s your version of Minecraft? Unfortunately, full mods don’t work with Minecraft Bedrock. In order to download, install mods on the Minecraft you want, and enjoy the game, you must have Minecraft: Java Edition on your PC. It is available on Mojang website and you need a Mojang account to purchase it.
Check your storage space. Like any download, mods take up storage space. They can range from a few hundred to a few thousand MB. The recommended memory requirement for Minecraft Java Edition is at least 4 GB and preferably an SSD instead of a classic HD.

If your computer doesn’t have more than 4 GB of free space, you may need to do a little general cleaning (or get a larger storage hard drive). Can your computer handle it? A quick Google search should bring you all of the recommended device specs for Minecraft, but here are some of the basics:
- GPU: Any graphics card that supports OpenGL 1.3 API and VBOs
- Operating system: Windows 7 or higher, OS X 10.9 Maverick or any Linux distribution from 2014
- RAM: 4 GB, at least DDR3 1600 MHz
Unfortunately, if your PC’s specs are lower than the minimum recommended specs, you won’t be able to install mods in Minecraft. So make sure you can handle everything.
Precautions Before Installation
As with anything online, it’s best to be careful when looking for Minecraft mods to download. There will be many seemingly innocuous download links and websites that hide viruses and trojans.
As a rule, search engines will return the safest results (especially if you use certain filters and parameters for your protection). However, it cannot be ruled out that obscure pages will pass the search engine’s security sieve. Always be smart when searching so as not to fall on websites with viruses.
Stay on sites that are well known, have heavy traffic, and are highly recommended by Minecraft or the gaming community as a source of reliable and safe mods. For example:
Note that many mods have shortened links through AdFly to monetize their creations. AdFly is a reasonably safe third-party URL shortener, but still.
Always be smart about clicking a link.
There are still opportunities for viruses to invade the download page during the 5-10 seconds between when your ads are displayed by AdFly and when AdFly finally approves the download page.
Here are some rules to keep in mind when clicking on AdFly links:
- Never click “obvious looking” download buttons while you are still on the advertisement page.
- Never click Allow if a dialog box appears while you are on the viewing page. Always choose “Block”;
- Always click the big yellow “Ignore Ad” button as soon as possible. Never click anything else;
- Never click any links on the ad page, even if you really want to see what they are offering or where they are supposed to take you. If you’re really curious about it, do your research later;
Always use your common sense when doing your downloads. When in doubt, give an adult a call or check for verified reviews.
Download Minecraft Forge
Before you can start downloading and installing mods in Minecraft, you must have Minecraft Forge installed. Minecraft Forge is a free, open source server that allows players to install and run Minecraft mods. It is designed to streamline, simplify and facilitate the use of mods like Nexus Mod from the Nexus website.
It’s also designed to maximize compatibility between community-created content and the game itself. Forge allows you to fully customize your Minecraft experience without too much effort.
We recommend downloading the latest version. Forge has been around for almost as long as Minecraft (it was introduced during Minecraft 1.13.2), so there will be many versions to choose from. Unless you’re interested in playing with older mods that are no longer supported or have been discontinued, you will get better results by downloading the latest version.
Important: Make sure you click the button that corresponds to your operating system; “Windows Installer” for Windows users, “Installer” for Mac and Linux users.
Run The Forge Program
Once you’ve safely downloaded the Forge program to your Downloads folder, you’ll need to run it. Just double-click the .jar file (or right-click it and choose “Run as administrator” if you see this option) and let it run.

What If My Antivirus Warns Me About Forge?
It’s not uncommon for antivirus programs like Windows Defender to identify Forge as “malicious” software. It doesn’t (unless you downloaded it from the recommended link). Forge is – and continues to be – downloaded by millions of people around the world every day.
Just close the warning, add the .jar file to your exception list, or basically do anything to make sure the system doesn’t take action against Forge. We recommend reinstalling Forge if the antivirus blocks it initially, as some files may have been corrupted if the antivirus stopped installing in between. Trust us, Forge is 100% safe.
Install Forge In Minecraft
After you’ve selected and opened the .jar file, you can install Forge into Minecraft with just two clicks.
At the top of the Forge window you will see three options: Install Client, Install Server, Extract. Make sure you install “Client. Scroll down and click the OK button.
Remember, your version of Forge must match your version of Minecraft. If you are running Minecraft version 1.13, you will need to download and install Forge version 1.13. If you update Minecraft regularly, your version of Minecraft will likely be the same as the latest version of Forge.
Check If The Installation Was Successful
Once you’ve verified that Forge has been installed, open Minecraft Launcher. Hover your mouse over the arrow next to the big green play button and click to expand the menu. You should see “Forge” in the list of installed programs and updates. Select it and click the Play button. This will start Minecraft with Forge installed so you can install some mods.
Time To Install Mods In Minecraft
After you’ve installed Forge for Minecraft: Java Edition, a wonderful new world awaits you.
Find Mods To Download.
Now, in order to install mods in Minecraft, we first have to find some. So go ahead and search the Minecraft mod font sites we recommend, like www.minecraftmods.com ou Curse Forge. The download of the mods depends on the website you are visiting, but they should all follow a very clear format that tells you the name of the mod and what it does. All of the items should have a pretty obvious download button as well.
This is the download buttons screen on the website. Curse Forge :
And that’s the download buttons screen on the Minecraft Mods page:
Once you find a mod you want, download it to your default downloads folder or download it instantly to your mods folder. If you choose the first option, you can always manually move the download to your Minecraft Mods folder.
Find The Minecraft Mods Folder.
Your Mods folder is usually in your .minecraft folder, which is usually on your C: drive. Then go to Local Disk C: \ Users \ yourname \ AppData \ Roaming \ .minecraft, where “yourname” is the name you entered as the main user of the PC.
Alternatively, just enter C: \ Users \ yourname \ AppData \ Roaming \ .minecraft in the address bar of the file explorer. It should show the correct location. You will likely see some folders next to the Mods folder (e.g. Logs folder, Saves folder, Assets folder, etc.). If you don’t know what these other folders are about, it’s best not to touch them.
If you don’t see a Mods folder in the .minecraft folder, you can always create one. Just right click anywhere in the .minecraft folder, choose a new one, create a folder and rename it New Folder to Mods.
Make Sure Your Downloaded Mods Are In The “Mods” Folder.
To install mods in Minecraft, make sure they are in the Minecraft Mods folder. You can manually move the mods (using the classic Ctrl + C-Ctrl + V method) to your mods folder (in the .minecraft folder) or download the mods directly to your mods folder.
Start Minecraft With Forge Installed.
If you’ve done everything according to these instructions and there have been no unforeseen complications, your mods should appear in your game immediately or take effect immediately upon launch. If everything works out, just play! If not, we recommend doing a fresh install of Forge, uninstalling the software and using a program like Ccleaner to clean up the rest of the files from the PC and then restarting the process of installing mods in Minecraft.
Before we finish this article on how to install mods in Minecraft, here are just a few more things to keep in mind while downloading, installing, and running your Minecraft mod. Mods can sometimes have compatibility issues with other mods. This simply means that some mods – especially those from different creators – may not get along with others.
To find out which are conflicting, we recommend disabling mods one at a time until you find the problematic ones. From there, you need to decide which ones to keep and which ones to do without. Disabling mods is a lot easier than completely uninstalling them. All you have to do is add the “.disabled” extension to the end of the mod filename. This will prevent them from appearing in the game.
Most mods won’t work in multiplayer, so make sure you don’t download any mods to share the experience with your friends. They just don’t work that way. Also, be warned that some of them may be considered cheaters by the game depending on what they are doing. Be aware of this before switching to multiplayer with mods installed.
Now that you know how to install Minecraft mods, a whole new world of possibilities has opened up for you. Community created content really gets the game excited about the simple fact that players know what other players want.
It is much easier for consumers to create the content they want because they have access to the likes, wants and opinions of other consumers without having to worry about whether or not the product is profitable and other things that studios do before launch of something tend to be (many times players want things, but that doesn’t mean they will pay for them).
This means that the mods they create are likely something you always wanted in the world of Minecraft, or something you didn’t know you wanted in the world of Minecraft until you got it there. Either way, your Minecraft experience will never be the same.
Bonus: Nvidia RTX
If you want to make your game look beautiful, in addition to installing mods in Minecraft, we can count on a little help from Nvidia’s RTX technology as well. The game is completely different from the original, allowing creations with materials like glass that would look different if they were made in the base game. RTX is only available in the Windows 10 version of the game, and you can find it on Microsoft Store.
