The spread of the infection is increasing across Europe and Sweden.

Cases seem to increase more and more and new recommendations may become relevant.

– It depends on which variant it comes, but we will certainly see a social spread this fall, says Ali Mirazimi, professor of clinical virology.

– Go in that direction. We are already seeing that it is spreading more and more. We don’t test in the same way, but we see the same trend increasing the number of infected, says Ali Mirazimi.

Currently two sub-variants of omicron predominate, BA.4 and BA.5.

– These subvariants simply outweigh the protection against infection you received from a previous infection or vaccination, says Ali Mirazimi and continues:

– If you were previously infected with BA.1 or BA.2, the protection against the infection disappeared after a few months and the same applies to vaccination. However, it should be emphasized that protection against serious diseases still remains, says Ali Mirazimi.

Variant that differs

According to Ali Mirazimi, it is not impossible that multiple recommendations can be relevant.

– The Swedish Public Health Agency knows best. But I think the likelihood is very low that we will get recommendations now over the summer, says Ali Mirazimi.

He does not believe that the spread of the infection would be in the same situation as a year ago.

– We have vaccines and I don’t think we would get much advice. Most people most likely don’t get so seriously ill that they need hospital treatment, but must stay home. Some tips may come back but not all.

What is the reason for this increase?

– The most contributing factor is that this sub-variant differs from the previous one. We started socializing differently, events started, people go to concerts and we travel a lot more, says Ali Mirazimi.
