Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has said he wants to see Rasmus Hojlund’s “happy face” when the 20-year-old striker starts scoring goals for the club.

Lacking a reliable ‘number nine’, United pursued Hojlund due to his long-term potential over more expensive ready-made options and committed to investing up to £72 million in the young Dane.

His debut was delayed a few weeks due to a pre-existing injury, but Hojlund impressed off the bench on an otherwise disappointing day for United the last time against Arsenal.

Hojlund, who drew early comparisons with Erling Haaland due to his build and Scandinavian origins but grew up idolizing Cristiano Ronaldo, now hopes to go from strength to strength and is already working hard to fit in.

“He’s someone who always tries to talk to everyone, he’s really open,” Fernandes said in an episode of the club’s internal conference. Player diaries series.

“From what I’ve seen, he wants to work and join the team because he wants to be fit as soon as possible. I think he has a lot of energy, a lot of strength and I hope also a lot of goals.

“I want to build with him that bond that I have with the other forwards and wingers because I’m here to serve them, so I want them to feel happy to have their chances. After that, it’s about scoring for them. I want my forwards and wingers they will score goals and I want to see their happy faces celebrating in front of the Stretford End.”

United have struggled to get consistent goals from their attackers in recent years. Fernandes scored a one-off 28 points from midfield in 2020/21, while Cristiano Ronaldo scored 24 in 2021/22 but left quickly, and an equally veteran Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored 28 in his only full season. Romelu Lukaku has managed 27 just once, Edinson Cavani reached the maximum of 17 in the 2020/21 season and Anthony Martial has surpassed 20 goals in just one season since arriving in 2015.

Marcus Rashford has topped 20 goals in three of the last four full seasons but largely stands out and is the only United player to score at least 20 goals in all competitions in consecutive seasons since. Cristiano Ronaldo he did so in 2006/07, 2007/08 and 2008/09 during his first stint.
