The British Ministry of Defense published the following information:
- Ukraine has successfully started operating one of the reactors of the Rivne nuclear power plant with Western fuel.
- Ukraine’s nuclear reactors are all based on Soviet technology, so they relied on Russia for nuclear fuel supplies. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, Kiev has been trying to diversify its fuel supply.
- Half of Ukraine’s energy supply comes from nuclear power plants, but the purchase and use of Western fuel is an important milestone towards independence from the Russians. According to the British, however, the influence of the Russians on Ukraine’s energy supply has “significantly decreased.”
