Beware of pesticides at the table: the foods that contain the most – RB

A new report by Legambiente has shed light on a problem that is unfortunately still widespread in Italy: the use of pesticides in food and agriculture . “In the Peninsula, the use of synthetic chemicals, used to protect themselves from weeds, insects, fungi and the possible development of biotic diseases, is still extremely widespread”, we read, in some products, more than others.

Pesticides on the table: which foods with the highest percentage

The dossier Stop pesticides 2021 , created by Legambiente in collaboration with Alce Nero, as every year he photographs the situation in Italy regarding the use of pesticides in agriculture.

According to the data disclosed, the 35, 32% of the regular samples examined show one or more pesticide residues , albeit within the legal limits. In this regard, approximately 97 different active substances were found : a sample of pears with 12 residues, one of cherries with 10 residues, one of plum with 9 residues.

The fruit is confirmed as the most interested category. Over 50% of the samples – precisely 53, 59% – contains one or more residues. Among these, table grapes (85, 71%), le pears (82, 14%), strawberries (71, 79 %) and peaches (67, 39%). On the other hand, among the processed foods wine and honey are those with the highest percentage of residues allowed, counting respectively about 39, 90% and the 20%.

“From the dossier, which collects data from 2020, despite the emergence of a low percentage of irregular samples, that is, with active ingredients beyond the permitted thresholds equal to 1, 39 % of the total, it must be said that only 63% of samples analyzed is regular and without pesticide residues. What is worrying is the rest 35%, relative to those regular samples but containing one or more pestide residues, albeit within the legal limits “, explains Legambiente.

Pesticides in food, from fruit to vegetables

In line with the trend of past years, the fruit – as already mentioned above – is confirmed as the category in which the largest percentage of regular samples with one or more residues is concentrated. Specifically, in this category, the foods with a greater presence of pesticides are:

table grapes (85, 71%) the pears (82,14%) strawberries (71, 79%) peaches (67, 39%). These are also the products with the highest content of multiresidue , which respectively represent the 64, 29%, 71, 43%, 55, 13% And 54, 35% of the samples analyzed.

As regards the vegetables , however, “we observe a greater quantity of regular foods without residues (73, 81%) “, with only a few types that have high quantities of pesticides such as tomatoes (60, 20%) and peppers (48, 15%) which are among the most affected.

However, even if there was a fair percentage of products not contaminated by any type of pesticide, the vegetable is the one that contains the greatest number of irregularities : “1, 70% of the total samples belonging to the above, with samples of peppers that even reach 7, 41% of those analyzed “.

And speaking of products and foods that are dangerous to health, here the new calls for contaminated foods issued by the Ministry of Health relating to sheets and clams, here instead the batches of salami withdrawn from supermarkets.
