15. Contagion

Release date: October 6 2011

IMDb Score: 6.7

Available on HBO Go!

Let’s start with a film that is both unsettling and prophetic. In the days we live it is even a little disturbing to watch the film directed by Steven Soderbergh. The similarities with the Coronavirus pandemic are striking (the origin of the virus is in Asia, this infection is a type of flu but much more serious and some countries have been slow to take action).

In reality, there are so many similarities that the only thing that really seems to be missing to portray the current situation is the word Coronavirus.

The cast is incredible and has Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne and Jude Law.

14. Extermination 2

Release date: June 1 in 2007

IMDb score: 7.0

It is true that Extermination 2 is a sequel to the movie Exterminio , but we chose to put this on our list as it ends up portraying the effects of a pandemic a little better. The film directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, tells the story of the UK’s reconstruction after a kind of rabies virus devastated the country in less than 28 days.

The movie starts exactly 28 days after the death of the first infected and shows us that all precautions are few when we are dealing with a dangerous pathogen.

Very zombie, a lot of madness and a feeling enormous powerlessness are some of the things that the viewer can find in this production of 2007.

13. The Host

Release date of: 18 of May 2007

IMDb Score: 7.1

Available on Netflix Brasil!

Long before the tremendous success it was Parasite , director Bong Joon Ho presented us with a film that completely deconstructs the typical approach given to productions about viruses or pandemics. In The Host we see a quiet South Korean city that ends up seeing its daily life completely altered, after a chemical component has been dumped in the waters of the river.

After a few years this chemical agent was responsible for the creation of a giant monster that emerges from the waters, not only putting the lives of the inhabitants of the region in danger due to its physical strength, but also because it has a super contagious virus.

If after Parasite you want to get to know more of the work of Bong Joon Ho, this is an excellent film to start!

12. Epidemic

Release date of: April 7th 1995

IMDb score: 6.6

Available on Netflix Brasil!

Many of the movies that address this theme, end up having a common agent – most of the infections are of animal origin, more specifically in monkeys. In Epidemic this is really a case, a monkey with a fictional disease called Motaba, is transported to the United States, thus starting an epidemic of a flu strain across the West Coast.

Throughout the film, we followed the actions of Morgan Freeman, Dustin Hoffman, and Rene Russo in an attempt to stop the spread of the dangerous virus… We can say that if you do not deal with anxiety well, then this is probably not a good choice. .

11. Blindness essay

Release date of: 12 September 2008

IMDb Score: 6.6

Blindness essay is a film directed by the Brazilian Fernando Meirelles, being an adaptation of the book by the Portuguese writer José Saramago, with the same name.

In this film we see the effects of a virus that makes with all those infected become blind, however there is a difference in this type of blindness, because contrary to what one would expect – in the place of black, the carriers of the disease only “come” white.

Throughout the film, we see the effects that a virus of this type has on society, always following the actions of a woman who seems to be totally immune to information

10. The flu

Date Of launching: 22 from November 2013

IMDb Rating: 6.7

The title of this film could not be more self-explanatory. In A Flu we witnessed the arrival of a strange super contagious flu virus in the South Korean city of Bundang. The panic among citizens increases as soon as this strange disease begins to spread through the community. Due to its proximity to Seoul, the country’s central government decides to close the city, isolating it from the rest of the world.

It is from that moment that the race for a vaccine begins, in an attempt to save thousands of people and to recover the peace of life in that city.

The Flu is an excellent example of how inspiring this theme is for several South Korean directors.

9. Kansen

Date Release date: October 2 2004

IMDb score: 6.0

Kansen is the only Japanese production on this list and is basically a hymn to everything that a health professional should not do in a hospital environment. In this film we see a doctor and a team of nurses making mistakes after mistakes, like the wrong administration of medicines and even the attempt to cover up a death due to medical negligence.

However, things stay much more serious when a patient with a highly deadly infection enters the hospital corridors.

We don’t want to give it spoilers , but we can end by saying that not all medical staff will finish the film in good health…

8. Yeon-ga-si

Release date: July 5 2012

IMDb score: 6.4

This is another good example of the fascination on the part of South Koreans in all this theme, and interestingly they always manage to be highly creative in the way they approach it.

In Yeon-ga-si (there was no official launch in Brazil), we saw a series of corpses mysteriously appearing in the channels of several rivers in the country, something that ends up generating a wave of panic completely uncontrolled. Later it is discovered that these bodies were infected by a virus that causes the infected to drown, throwing themselves into the rivers of their own free will.

As it could not be otherwise, this virus has again animal origin but is enhanced by the stupidity of some people with a very questionable ethical code.

7. Slither – The Invaders

Release date of: 15 June 2006

IMDb Score: 6.4

Well, after so much heavy film the time has come to lighten things up! Long before Guardians of the Galaxy , director James Gunn directed the movie Slither – The Invaders , a movie gore that has both bizarre and fun, but which already showed Gunn’s interest in matters related to space.

In the film, there is a parasite coming from space that starts infecting several people, who end up for turning into horrendous monsters … To make matters worse, planet Earth is still about to be invaded by extraterrestrials!

The film is super fun and ends up taking a completely different approach from all the other productions you can find on the list.

6. Terror Planet

Release date: October 4 2007

IMDb score: 7.1

Continuing with slightly lighter choices, we decided to put Planet Terror on the list for those looking to have fun (and not depress) in quarantine times.

Don’t expect a cinematic masterpiece, Planet Terror is a silly film that serves only one purpose, to have a good laugh while we spend a good time without any major worries. The plot of the film is very simple, the viewer accompanies an unusual group of humans (a stripper, her boyfriend, a sheriff and a doctor) in an attempt to catch an infection that turns everyone into a zombie.

The film is completely ridiculous, but if we want to put a good dose of feminine power on this list (and also fun), it’s impossible to ignore it Terror Planet .

5. World War Z

Release date of: 28 June 2013

IMDb Score: 7.1

This one promises to let your nerves blossom of the skin! World War Z is a film adaptation of the book by Max Brooks and as the name implies, it tells the story of a brutal pandemic that turns almost the entire human population into zombies.

Despite being a action film and a visual show, with very impressive special effects, there is a very challenging side at a psychological level. Oh, and there’s Brad Pitt in the lead!

There are rumors for a sequel, but over the years this scenario becomes less and less likely.

4. You 12 Monkeys

Release date of: 22 March 1996

IMDb Rating: 8.0

If out of all the films that we put on our list you only have a chance to watch one, then let this movie be The 12 Monkeys !

Directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Bruce Willis, the plot of the film is very interesting and unusual, combining the theme of epidemics with time travel. Very briefly, the character of Bruce Willis is a guy who lives in 2035 and that goes back in time to eradicate a dangerous epidemic.

Although it was launched in 1996, You 12 Monkeys has stood the test of time very well, and remains today as a very current production. Ah, Brad Pitt is also part of this cast.

3. Children of Hope

Release date: December 8 2006

IMDb score: 7.9

Well, get ready, this is a really heavy movie! Children of Hope focuses on a flu pandemic that ends up making all women on the planet infertile and as we know, a world without children is a world without a future.

Managed by the brilliant Alfonso Cuarón and starring Clive Owen, we are facing a cinematographic work that leaves us wondering what we would do in a similar situation.

Several topics are covered throughout the film, but with a constant premise throughout the nearly two hours of action – survival.

2. The Andromeda Enigma

Release date of: 10 March 1972

IMDb score: 7.2

O Andromeda Puzzle is the film that gave rise to all the other films about pandemics, when watching this production you are in front of the one that served as inspiration for everything that it was done next.

This science fiction classic tells the story of a group of scientists who are studying an extraterrestrial pathological agent that in contact with humans causes their death. Interestingly, there are two humans who appear to be immune to this species of virus.

The group of scientists goes into the laboratory and tries to find out more about the virus, in an attempt to find a solution to this new problem. .

1. The Army of Extermination

Release date of: 16 March in 1973

IMDb score: 6.1

It may not be the most incredible film on our list, but to be talking about pandemic films and not to mention any George A. Romero work would be a crime.

About to start a family, a fireman and a nurse struggle to survive in a city that was quarantined after the accidental launch of a highly contagious biological weapon. It is up to the scientific community to solve the problem and create a cure for this new virus, while the whole city becomes total anarchy.

A film that reminds us that collective hysteria never leads to solutions, but it does cause more problems!

Don’t confuse fiction with reality!

All of these films present a complete collapse of society and this is a scenario that will not happen in the current pandemic. . We will not see any major disruptions in the supply of food or in the supply of water and electricity.

What we see in films is something that only happens in Hollywood productions. Coronavirus is bad and will have big implications for many things in our lives, but we don’t have a mortality rate of 20%, as in Contagion .

Coronavirus is not an asteroid from outer space, Godzilla is not coming out of the ocean. We just need to do our part, staying at home and everything will quickly return to normal.

15 Pandemic Movies To Watch During The Quarantine In 2021! Goreng wakes up in a vertical prison. With several levels and two prisoners on each floor, the prison has a platform in the middle that goes down the building with food, passing through all levels. The amount of food that reaches the lower levels, however, depends on what the upper levels have taken from the banquet. But what does all this mean? How to get out of prison?

It is with this disturbing plot that the Spanish film O Poço has been drawing the attention of Netflix subscribers . Between theories and different interpretations, viewers mainly question the end of the new original streaming production.

What does the end mean?

Throughout the film, the metaphor for stratification and social inequality is very clear, with the exploration of the upper levels over the lower ones. Different characters and lines throw us in the face the horrors of this social dynamic: “solidarity or shit.”

11 PANDEMIC MOVIES TO WATCH NOW!11 PANDEMIC MOVIES TO WATCH NOW!

But there are still other interpretations. The most popular theory is that the film also features different symbols to represent figures and elements of Christianity. And here are some clues.

There are biblical messages throughout the film

In more than one scene, the characters quote biblical passages indicating that that message applies to the situation experienced there.

Goreng would be the representation of the Messiah

More than once, too, we see the characters calling Goreng “messiah”. There are those who discuss the hypothesis that everything – even the girl – is nothing but Goreng’s daydream, in the midst of the deprivations he spent in prison. Still, the reference is there. And he is the bearer of the message.

There are symbols of capital sins

As Goreng and Baharat go down the levels, there are characters who seem to represent the deadly sins. The clearest of them is you protecting your money, which is worthless inside, representing greed.

But there is still a gluttony in the figure of the boy with Down syndrome, who even though fed says it will kill the cellmate to eat what’s inside its stomach.

The number of levels has a strong meaning

In this interpretation, level 0 would be paradise; the platform, purgatory; and the last level, 333, hell. An element of the story that contributes to this interpretation is exactly the number of levels: 333.

As the prison always keeps 2 prisoners per level – placing a new one whenever one dies – the place has, in all, 666 occupants, number known as the symbol of the beast.

The girl was the message and a carrier was not needed

At the end of the film, only the child is above the level 0. This seems to be the confirmation of the other religious references in the Spanish feature. The scene seems to illustrate the biblical passage Matthew 19: 14: “Let the children come to me and do not stop them; for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are similar to them. ”

Because he is not like the child, Goreng stays behind, and heads into the darkness with his first cellmate, already dead, which indicates that the protagonist also dies.

What happens in the end

First let’s get to the facts . In the film, the protagonist Goreng (Ivan Massagué) shares the cell with different prisoners – replaced whenever they die – until he meets Baharat (Emilio Buale Coka). Together, they try to figure out how to reach level 0. in search of their freedom.

Pandemic movies

Goreng’s theory is that there is a message, a bigger objective behind the whole situation. The plan, then, is to divide the food equally between the levels, so as not to leave anyone without means of survival. Following the advice of a sage they know on the way between the levels, they decide to carry a kind of message. They keep a Pannacotta, to reach the last level with the message that they shared the food and there’s still left, which could mean a victory for the supposed challenge of the prison.

most realistic pandemic movies

The more they get deeper into levels below, the less survivors they find. Upon reaching the last level, the number 333, the duo is surprised to find a girl who is under age and in perfect health conditions, but hungry. To help her, they give her the Pannacotta.

most realistic pandemic movies

Baharat ends up dying from the injuries he acquired on the way down. After having visions with his former cellmates, Goreng is certain that the girl is the message, he is just the carrier. He descends with her on the platform, amid strong white light. In the darkness below, Goreng’s first cellmate appears and says, “Your journey ends here.” The two go to the dark, indicating that Goreng dies. The girl goes up to level 0.

Most Realistic Pandemic Movies

It may feel like we’re living in an alternate reality. Here’s how the state of our world stacks up against imaginary ones.

MEV-1, Contagion (2011)

Possibly the most realistic of the pandemic movie sub-genre, Contagion has become THE film of the moment, spurring more than its share of musings and think-pieces. At first, the movie reflected a worst-case scenario: a dangerous widespread disease, Gwyneth Paltrow dying. But, watching it now, it’s pretty striking how competent everyone is? I mean, the movie follows noble members of the government working tirelessly, taking every precaution, and coordinating with the WHO and CDC to eventually find (spoiler alert) a vaccine that saves mankind. Who would’ve though that Contagion would be the feel-good fantasy movie of 2020?

WATCH NOW

Solanum Virus, World War Z (2013)

The are seemingly infinite zombie apocalypse movies, but not all of those nightmare scenarios begin with a zombie virus pandemic. World War Z does, and it also stars Brad Pitt (definite bonus points). The actor plays a former United Nations investigator trudging through a zombie-filled, disease-laden landscape in search of a cure. (Nowadays, Pitt is currently portraying Dr. Anthony Fauci on Saturday Night Live, an equally heroic role indeed.)

WATCH NOW

Motaba, Outbreak (1995)

A movie that starts out following the spread of a deadly Ebola-like virus called Motaba unexpectedly turns into a search for one monkey (inexplicably named Betsy), the virus’ original host. While the WHO determined that COVID-19 originated in bats, I don’t think (hopefully) that anyone is hunting one specific bat. Poor Betsy.

WATCH NOW

Virus, The Cassandra Crossing (1976)

Strangers trapped on a train to nowhere? Check. Sophia Loren? Check. A deadly virus? Check. Swedish terrorists? Check. O.J. Simpson? Unfortunately, check. This movie features what may be most random assortment of themes, events, and people in existence. The only real similarities between The Cassandra Crossing and our current moment is the existence of a contagious virus and, perhaps, that the New York Times review declared the film “profoundly, offensively stupid,” a few adjectives that could certainly be ascribed to certain, um, public figures today.

WATCH NOW

Krippin Virus, I Am Legend (2007)

Will Smith walking through an isolated Manhattan and holding extended conversations with his German Shepard is (sadly) all too familiar. Will Smith running from cannibalistic mutants, infected by a virus originally engineered to cure cancer, less so. Not quite a pandemic movie and not quite a zombie movie, I Am Legend is most relatable for showcasing the first quarantine puppy.

WATCH NOW

Kalavirus, 12 Monkeys (1995)

Although our culture does have an odd fascination with pandemic monkeys, there are no actual monkeys in this movie. Instead, Bruce Willis fights the deadly Kalavirus through—you didn’t guess it—time travel! (If someone is in the past trying to stop COVID-19, can you please pick up the pace?) 12 Monkeys also features the line “Science isn’t an exact science,” which definitely couldn’t be re-appropriated in a dangerous way today or anything.

WATCH NOW

Mad Zombie Disease, Zombieland (2009)

For some levity, we recommend this “zom-com” featuring an unlikely bromance between Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg. A “Mad Zombie Disease” spreads across the United States, turning Americans into zombies—but the most unrealistic part of the movie is actually that Purell is still readily available.

WATCH NOW

Andromeda, The Andromeda Strain (1971)

Moving on from the zombie pandemic, we now present the alien pandemic. In The Andromeda Strain, an alien organism travels to Earth on a crashed satellite and infects Americans. While it may seem like COVID-19 came from nowhere, it didn’t actually, you know, fall out of the sky. However, when the movie was released, the Infectious Diseases Society of America called it the “most significant, scientifically accurate, and prototypic of all films of this [killer virus] genre,” so there’s that.

WATCH NOW

Flare Virus, The Maze Runner series (2014)

In this dystopian YA series, based on best-selling books, the Flare Virus devastates mankind and it’s up to the young, hunky Dylan O’Brien to save the world. Which he must do by figuring out a glorified corn maze. Effie from Skins is also there, though, so it’s not all bad.

WATCH NOW

The Plague, Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

While not exactly a pandemic movie, Monty Python and the Holy Grail certainly showcases the bubonic plague. Its dark humor may seem even darker nowadays, but the famed “bring out your dead” scene still stirs up a chuckle. “I can’t take him like that, it’s against regulations,” says a coroner, referencing a man yelping, “I’m not dead! I feel happy!”
