In an ideal world, the club season would have stopped halfway through. No, scratch it, in an ideal world the club season doesn’t stop at all because this World Cup takes place under traditional circumstances.

But whatever, we’re here now.

2022/23 Premier League The season has been quite hectic and surprising so far: Arsenal will be top at Christmas, Newcastle are suddenly the best team in the world, Nottingham Forest haven’t imploded despite signing a new team.

Here are our alternate rewards of the season so far.

Disclaimer: From this point forward, “season” means “season so far”. It’s too painful to type two more words each time and it just feels more clunky.

1. Player of the season

1st – Erling Haaland2nd – Xhaka granite3rd – William Saliba4th – Miguel Almiron5th – Kevin DeBruyne

At this rate, Erling Haaland will score around 135 goals this season. Taking into account the fact that he won’t even go to the World Cup and the total rises to around 178. I won’t show my work.

2. Young Player of the Season

1st – Erling Haaland2nd – William Saliba3rd – Bukayo Saka4th – Moises Caicedo5th – Gabriele Martinelli

Could you be bored for a moment, Erling?

The free-scoring Norwegian freak is eligible for the official PFA award within 20 days. I’m sorry, William Saliba.

3. Goalkeeper of the season

1st – Alisson2nd – Nick Pope3rd – Jordan Pickford4th – David Raya5th – Kepa Arrizabalaga

Liverpool often get away with their haphazard defending because they have an imperious goalkeeper in their sticks. Alisson has been busier than usual this season and if he had performed better he would have been tested for PED every day.

4. The biggest crybaby

1st – Cristiano Ronaldo2nd – Cristiano Ronaldo3rd – Cristiano Ronaldo4th – Cristiano Ronaldo5th – Cristiano Ronaldo

Have you thought about doing your job, Cristiano?

5. Most Improved Player

1st – Xhaka granite2nd – Miguel Almiron3rd – Leander Trossard4th – Diogo Dalot5th – Kepa Arrizabalaga

Granit Xhaka’s redemption arc was a jaw-dropping watch, particularly for me being there (and laughing) on the day he went to war with Arsenal fans in 2019.

6. Signature of the season

1. Erling Haaland2. Gabriel Jesus3. Lisandro Martinez4. Casemiro5. Pervis Stupinan

Erling, could you please stop hogging the spotlight for a second?

7. The most exciting team

1st – Arsenal2nd – Newcastle United3rd – Fulham4th – Brighton & Hove Albion5th – Manchester United

Sorry Manchester City, but you just don’t have that juice anymore. Arsenal play in a similar way but are much more exciting.

I also withdraw my apologies. I’m not sorry at all. Football is not a simulation.

8. More likely to leave a stadium before the full-time award

1st – Cristiano Ronaldo2nd – Cristiano Ronaldo3rd – Cristiano Ronaldo4th – Cristiano Ronaldo5th – Cristiano Ronaldo

Have you thought about taking the field when your coach asks you to, Cristiano?

9. Manager of the season

origin 1Arteta excels | Visionhaus/GettyImages

1st – Mikel Arteta2nd – Eddie Howe3rd – Marco Silva4th – Gary O’Neil5th – Thomas Frank

Well it took three seasons, but Mikel Arteta is showing exactly why Arsenal have been so eager to be by his side.

10. Goal of the season

1st – Ivan Toney v Leeds United2nd – Miguel Almiron against Fulham3rd – Miguel Almiron v Southampton4th – Allan Saint-Maximin against Wolves5th – Youri Tielemans vs Everton

The free kick was aesthetically pleasing, but of course I’m talking about Toney’s run of Illan Meslier and subsequent tearing through the retreating Leeds defenders here. Phwoarrrrr.

11. Funniest moment of the season

1st – The handshake of Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel2nd – Aston Villa fans sing Demba Ba chant to Steven Gerrard3rd – Manchester United equalized through Marko Arnautovic and Adrien Rabiot after poor start4th – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s BT Sport spot5th – Joachim Andersen lures Darwin Nunez into a red card

I’m incredibly biased, but the laughter that erupted in a busy Brighton pub (much of it from me) was as loud and canned as when Del Boy fell into the wine bar. It’s also very hard to find footage of Villa fans singing that song.

12. Rivalry of the Season

origin 1Stick it in the trophy cabinet | Visionhaus/GettyImages

1st – Cristiano Ronaldo against Manchester United

There is no top five for this award because a) nothing comes close to Ronaldo going toe to toe with his own soccer team and b) the “Ronaldo ranks five out of five” joke would lose any meaningful impact if I did again.
