Manchester United winger Antony has bizarrely blamed air conditioning in Qatar which forced him to miss training in Brazil last week.

Antony was forced out of training for two days following the Selecao’s 2-0 win over Serbia in their opening group match, with journalists reporting it as an “illness” rather than an injury.

He then came off the bench in the second world Cup match just days later – a hard-fought 1-0 win against Switzerland – and has now revealed what caused the problem.

“It was a little difficult” Anthony said later. “I ended up having a bad feeling there for a few days which complicated me a bit. I’m recovering well and getting 100%. It was more of a disease, in the throat. It was the air conditioning.”

Alisson Becker and Lucas Paqueta also missed some training for Brazil last week too, and Antony hinted that he’s not the only player on the court to have experienced the problem.

“Other players also had coughs and sore throats,” he said. “It’s very difficult for me to get sick, but I’m happy to be an important part of the team. Whenever you need Antony, I’m available.

Air conditioning has also been a problem for players in other sports, especially sportsmen who are not used to it.

Tennis player Daniil Medvedev, who was the world number one at the time, cited it as the reason for his defeat at the US Open earlier this year.

“I actually felt a little sick today,” he said. “I get sick every ride in the US from the A/C systems that are crazy here.”
