After almost two years of a pandemic, unfortunately, we are used to reading about companies – small and large – which claim to be forced to suspend their activity because they are unable to cope with the crisis. This time it is the turn of Saxa Gres SPA , which announced the one-month stop due to unsustainable costs of production costs. To bring the company to its knees, however, not only the health emergency, but the growing increase in bills.

Another multinational closes in Italy, the announcement: costs electricity and unsustainable bills

President Francesco Borgomeo told Corriere: “We cannot produce at a loss, as we have done for a few weeks. We will make up for these days of production stoppage in the summer to keep faith with the commitments made with customers, trusting in a solution that in the meantime will cool down prices “.

By now unmanageable, the costs that Saxa Gres SPA faces for energy consumption, i.e. electricity bills , already very high for those who work in the ceramic production sector.

Today Borgomeo is forced to stop the business, hoping to be able to resume as soon as possible, but without giving discounts to the Government: “We pay for the choices of a country that is not self-sufficient in terms of energy – he said -. We are not only in the presence of international speculation but also of wrong policies. I wonder, for example, what sense does it make to take Lazio waste abroad to always buy the energy produced with our materials abroad, appropriately treated in waste-to-energy plants that here still prevent us from making them despite the fact that the NRP also requires them “.

Offices and workers at risk in Italy

Saxa Gres SPA has numerous production sites in Italy, where they are used overall about 450 workers (who could lose everything if the crisis announced by the president does not return by the summer).

The locations at risk of closure are located in Anagni (province of Frosinone), Grestone di Roccasecca (Frosinone), and in the Saxa Gualdo (ex Tagina) of Gualdo Tadino (province of Perugia) and in the Gresstone of Spilamberto (in Reggio Emilia).

Dear bills, the impact on businesses and work

The growing increase in electricity and gas costs has generated a sort of ripple effect in Italy which, inevitably, it will also affect companies and workers in the country. More expensive bills translate into higher expenses, which companies – as happened with Saxa Gres SPA – are not always able to afford (here, for example, we have analyzed the impact of the increases on Italian companies).

Although the growing trend in costs has occurred almost everywhere and for any product (here the updated price list of goods, services and products), some regions, however, have been more affected than others , where the increase in raw materials and colder temperatures have led to higher bills (here the regions most affected by the expensive gas bills).

But in all this , it will probably be the workers who pay the most expensive price who at best risk to be placed in layoffs or, at worst, to lose their job. Because to cope with the losses, as often happens, companies can decide to proceed with cuts in the workforce, perhaps without being able to reintegrate the dismissed staff.
