All-day strike at Greek airports – All flights are cancelled

The strike – to which, according to their union’s information on Tuesday, the air traffic controllers will also join – will start one minute after midnight on Thursday morning and last for 24 hours. The passengers have already been informed about the flight cancellations, the announcement states.

The prelude to the strike call is the serious train accident that occurred in the early hours of March 1, and the country’s major trade unions have been demanding a full investigation ever since.

In the worst train accident in the country’s history, fifty-seven people – most of them under the age of 30 – were killed and many injured when a passenger train and a freight train collided near Larissa in central Greece.

Before the accident, several people drew attention to the inadequate condition of the Greek railway network and the deficiencies in railway safety, and representatives of the trade unions sounded the alarm about the lack of manpower. Due to the misfortune, there were several strikes and demonstrations in Greece, Athens and Thessaloniki, and there were several clashes between the police and the protesters.
