APPLE

Developer Kosta Eleftheriou discovered a scam application inside the Apple App Store, which removed it. Here’s what it is and how to recognize one

13 January 2022

Contrary to what most users Apple claim, the iOS operating system for mobile devices is not an invulnerable fortress . Users can encounter the same problems encountered by Android devices and, more generally, by any tool connected to Internet .

The developer Kosta Eleftheriou has indeed discovered a scam application inside of the App Store , Apple’s virtual store, through which you can download or purchase applications for iPhone, iPad and more. The app in question has been lying there for several years, receiving thousands of downloads and many (dubious) positive reviews . Apparently, therefore, this is something unsuspected, but the most attentive users cannot help but notice some peculiarities that characterize the malicious applications . This seriously questions Apple’s review process regarding its App Store.

Apple, what is the scam application

Developer Kosta Eleftheriou recently focused on an app that has been in the Apple App Store for about four years . It is a rather famous application, which, however, has all the typical characteristics of harmful or scams .

The app in question is called AmpME – Speaker & Music Sync , has about 100 thousand download, with over 50 thousand reviews and a rating of 4.3 stars . All these statistics make it unsuspected , yet it is potentially very dangerous for the privacy and security of Apple users.

AmpME is for free synchronization of your music with phones, wireless speakers and computers. Not everyone, however, seems to have noticed some of its suspicious characteristics.

Fortunately, as soon as the news leaked online, Apple removed the application , albeit with a guilty delay.

Apple, how to recognize a scam application

Malicious apps typically have a rather expensive auto-renewing subscription , which is easy to activate but difficult to cancel . AppME, for example, provides for an automatic weekly renewal of 9, 99 Dollars (almost 9 $) , with an exaggerated total annual cost of 520 Dollars (450 EUR).

Another aspect to keep an eye on are the reviews : generally there are a lot of positive ones published by accounts with very particular names. This means that these are paid reviews via fake profiles . As we’ve seen, AmpME has an average rating of 4.3 stars and it’s hard to find negative reviews.
