After many years in show business, Rita Wilson is thankful she got this far – and knows there is more to complete.

“Every morning I get up and say, ‘Thank you, God. I’m still here,'” she said People. “I hope I still have many years ahead of me to create.”

“For me, if I was working, it was satisfying,” said the California native. “Acting is really the only job I’ve ever had, aside from being a ticket taker at a concert hall and working in retail for a couple months in high school. So, I always came with the idea that I was doing something that I loved, and it just so happened to be entertainment world.”

The star, 66, with whom she is married Tom Hanksstarted acting when she was 16 and continued to appear in shows such as Breast friends And The company of threebut when she met the actor, 66, she wanted to be a mom there for her kids – Chet And Truman. “I slowed down my work because really she wanted to be the mom it was there when they got home and carpooled and did all those things,” he recalled. Tom also worked a lot, so we traveled with him. If we both worked and weren’t home, my kids would have been affected. I wouldn’t call the slowdown in my career a sacrifice, I would call it a choice.”

However, she does not resent her husband instead, one of the many reasons their relationship works is because they are each other’s biggest cheerleaders.

“Tom and I have always supported each other and what we do,” she revealed. “I remember doing press briefings in the past, and interviewers were like, ‘Damn, it must be so hard to be with someone so famous.’ I thought, ‘Why do they say that?’ Then I realized that the question was more about them and how they would feel in that situation rather than me.”

“If you have someone who’s happy about your success and you’re happy about their success, that’s not even a problem that comes up,” she continued. “Do you know about schadenfreude, when you are happy about someone’s failure? Well, there is another concept called freudenfreude, which is when you are happy for someone’s success. I live in freudenfreude. Someone else’s success doesn’t detract from mine.”

These days, Wilson focuses on singing, as well as producing.

“I set a limit on taking on a certain type of role: the mother who feedswife, sister, friend,” he shared. But I found tremendous creative satisfaction through my songwriting.”

Wilson was even inspired to continue pursuing music even further after talking to a good friend Bruce Springsteen.

“I got into music later in life, so it made me doubt myself because I knew there were people who had more experience than me,” she stated. “At that time, I asked Bruce, who is a family friend of ours: ‘Bruce, what makes me think I can start writing now when you’ve been doing it all your life?’ He said, ‘Because, Reets, creativity is independent of time.'”

“That absolutely blew me away, because it’s so true,” she added. “No one says, ‘Oh, sorry, if you didn’t become a hit in your 20s doing this, there’s no room for you now.’ And it wasn’t like I was trying to become the next pop sensation. I was just grateful to have the opportunity to learn the craft and pursue it.”
