Thousands of people have been evacuated, schools and offices closed and a shipping ban has been imposed in the Philippines in preparation for Typhoon Mawar.

The typhoon, packing gusts of up to 190 kilometers per hour (52.7 meters per second), is expected to pass by, but not over, the northern provinces of the Philippines. Meteorologists predict it will move toward Taiwan and southern Japan over the weekend.

Authorities have warned of large waves, flash floods and landslides as the typhoon moves past the provinces of Cagayan and Batanes on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Nearly 5,000 people have sought shelter in Cagayan, Batanes and other provinces, but the number is likely to rise due to precautionary evacuations in flood-prone areas.

In the Philippines, schools are suspended and offices are closed, except for those related to typhoon preparations.

Flights to and from the typhoon-approaching provinces have also been canceled, and fishing and passenger vessels are prohibited from going to sea.

In at least one province, the authorities have also banned the sale of alcohol.

Office of Civil Defense Assistant Secretary Rafi Alejandro warned residents that the weather can change rapidly and there is a potential threat to human life.

Mawar ripped through Guam last week. It was the strongest typhoon to hit this part of the United States in 20 years.
