The G7 countries may announce a ban on the export of Russian diamonds in the next two to three weeks, thus further trying to reduce the income that Russia spends on the war against Ukraine, the news agency “Reuters” reports, citing a Belgian government official.
From the beginning of 2024, a direct ban on the purchase of Russian diamonds may be established, and a mechanism of indirect bans will be developed, which will limit their movement across the border, reports the news agency “Bloomberg”.
The West has already imposed extensive financial and trade sanctions on Russia, but the diamond import ban had not yet been implemented.
The fact that it was the turn of diamonds started to be talked about before the G7 summit in Hiroshima.
However, this was not mentioned in the summit’s final statement.
All this time, it was Belgium – their biggest importer – who opposed the introduction of the ban.
