Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the Russian mercenary group “Wagner”, appears to be regaining the favor of President Vladimir Putin, according to analysts at the US Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Since the regular units of the Russian troops have not been able to fulfill the tasks that Putin has set them for the winter offensive, “Wagner” will receive reinforcements (ammunition and political recognition). This is a sharp departure from the Kremlin’s course regarding the use of “Wagner” and Prigozhin forces in Bakhmut, the think tank explains.
Sources linked to Wagner said on Monday that the group was preparing three motorized rifle brigades of mobilized soldiers to reinforce its flanks in Bahmut, according to the ISW.
Prigozhin has also confirmed that the airborne forces are working alongside “Wagner” and indicated that his group is actively receiving ammunition.
“Prygozhin has advocated for the Wagner to receive more artillery shells, and this indicates that Prigozhin has resumed supplies of ammunition from the Russian Ministry of Defense,” explains ISW.
