In the center of London on Thursday, a car crashed into the gates of Downing Street, which separates the street on which the residence of the British Prime Minister is located, the police said.

A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing criminal damage and dangerous driving.

There are no reports that anyone was injured in the accident.

It is also not known whether Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was in his office at the time.

A video posted on social media shows a white car driving at low speed across the main street of the government district, Whitehall, directly towards the gates of Downing Street.

Footage taken soon after shows the car crashing into a metal gate and its trunk open.

It is currently unclear whether the collision was intentional.

As the police confirmed, the law enforcement officers are currently working on clarifying the circumstances, but the incident is not related to terrorism.

Downing Street is a narrow street with a row of houses, and among them is the Prime Minister’s official residence in the streets Tenth House.

The gates were closed in 1989 in response to a threat from the Irish Republican Army.

Public access to the street is restricted and the gates are constantly guarded by armed police.
