Dutch diplomat Ron van Dartel, who just three weeks ago was tasked with promoting the Netherlands’ involvement in the reconstruction of Ukraine, was forced to resign after his remarks that “Ukrainians are also Russians” came to light.
The Dutch Foreign Ministry said that van Dartel resigned with immediate effect, and that the Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation respects his decision and has accepted his resignation.
Van Dartel is an experienced diplomat. He was previously the ambassador of the Netherlands to Serbia, Poland and Russia.
The Dutch broadcasting organization RTL reported that before taking up his new position, the diplomat told an author of a forthcoming book that “Ukrainians are also Russians”, saying that this is a reality and should not be forgotten. The diplomat’s statements were made public after assuming the post of envoy.
