Russian leader Vladimir Putin met on Friday with Belarus’s authoritarian leader, Alexander Lukashenko, who has already suggested that Minsk could join Moscow in its efforts to revive its long-standing alliance with North Korea.

Lukashenko made the suggestion during a meeting with Putin in Sochi, where the Russian leader said he would inform his Belarusian counterpart about Wednesday’s meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un in the Russian Far East.

“I would like to inform you about the discussions on the situation in the region, which is quite important, and also touch on the most pressing issue – the situation in Ukraine,” Putin said at the beginning of the meeting.

“We could think about trilateral cooperation,” answered Lukashenko. “It seems to me that Belarus could also find some work here.”

The US and its allies believe that Kim is likely to supply Russia with munitions that it can use in its war against Ukraine, while North Korea will receive advanced weapons and technology from Russia in return. It is true that this would violate UN sanctions prohibiting arms trade with North Korea.

The talks taking place in Sochi on Friday are the seventh meeting between Putin and Lukashenko this year.
