The Supreme Court of Prague has annulled the decision of a lower court, by which former Prime Minister Andrejs Babis was acquitted in the case of embezzling two million euros from the European Union (EU).
The court referred the case to the Municipal Court of Prague for re-examination, according to information published on Friday in the database of court documents.
The Supreme Court made its decision the previous day, but it was not made public until now.
In January, the Prague Municipal Court also acquitted Babis’s companion, Jana Nagvova.
Babis denied guilt and insisted that the accusations were politically motivated.
At the moment, it is not yet clear when the re-examination of the case could take place.
Babis’s case involves the rural property “Storks’ Nest”, which received EU subsidies when it was transferred to the ownership of Babis’ family members from “Agrofert”, a conglomerate of approximately 250 companies owned by Babis.
Later, “Agrofert” again took over “Storks nest” in its ownership.
The subsidies were intended for medium and small businesses, and Agrofert did not qualify for them.
“Agrofert” later returned the subsidies.
Babis was the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic from 2017 to 2021.
He is currently in the opposition because his centrist populist party “Action of Dissatisfied Citizens” (ANO) lost the 2021 elections.
He also ran for president, but lost in January. Former army general Petr Pavels won.
