Prince Harry will attend the coronation of his father, King Charles III, on May 6 at Westminster Abbey in London, Buckingham Palace announced on Wednesday.
But Harry’s wife Meghan will stay in California with the children. Charles III’s coronation coincides with Harry’s son Prince Archie’s birthday.
The 74-year-old Charles became the king of Great Britain on September 8 of last year, when his mother Queen Elizabeth II, who ruled for 70 years, died.
The royal palace has said that Charles III’s coronation ceremony will be based on “ancient tradition and luxury”, but will also reflect “the monarch’s role today and his vision for the future”.
Prince Harry married the American actress Meghan Markle, whose father is white and whose mother is black, in 2018, but the couple had disagreements with the rest of the royal family and in 2020 they stepped down from their official duties and moved to the United States. There, they gave a wide-ranging interview to Oprah Winfrey, in which they claimed that the tabloid attention and the royal family’s refusal to help made Markle consider suicide, and that there were racist views and attitudes within the royal family.
After the interview, the British royal family released a statement on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II, in which the queen expressed regret for the difficulties the couple faced, but stressed that “memories may differ” and their family will always be loved.
