Leaked US Defense Department documents show that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who is one of the US’s closest allies in the Middle East, ordered the production of up to 40,000 missiles for secret shipment to Russia, the Washington Post reports.

The newspaper reports that a secret document dated February 17 narrates alleged talks between Sisi and the top Egyptian military officials, as well as plans to supply artillery shells and gunpowder to Russia. According to the document, Sisi instructed officials to keep the production and shipment of the missiles secret “to avoid problems with the West.”

In recent days, dozens of leaked documents containing assessments and secret intelligence reports not only on Ukraine and Russia, but also analysis of US allies have appeared on social media. However, it is not clear whether these documents are authentic or fabricated.

The Egyptian authorities told journalists that they adhere to the position of non-interference in the Ukrainian war and call on all parties to lay down their arms. A US government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the delivery plan did not appear to have been carried out.
