The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office has recognized the non-governmental organization “Free University” registered in Latvia as “undesirable” in the country, according to the information published on the website of the General Prosecutor’s Office of the neighboring country.

The Russian General Prosecutor’s Office based the decision on the fact that the “Free University” was established by a Russian citizen living in the territory of Latvia, whom Russia recognized as a “foreign agent”.

“Teachers of the educational institution promote the activities of organizations recognized as extremist in the territory of the Russian Federation,”

announced the General Prosecutor’s Office, without specifying which organizations it is about.

Also, the non-governmental organization is blamed for the fact that students are “created a permanent dislike” for Russia during their studies, “simultaneously imposing an ultra-liberal model of European democracy”.

The General Prosecutor’s Office of Russia has indicated that the Ministry of Justice of Russia has been informed about the decision to include the “Free University” in the list of “undesirable” organizations.

In 2020, the former lecturers of the Russian Higher School of Economics announced the establishment of the “Free University”. The authors of the idea of the project are teachers of the School of Philosophy Viktors and Yulia Gorbatovi, Kirill Martinov, who is also the editor-in-chief of the Riga-based “Novaya Gazeta. Eiropa”, and law professor Yelena Lukyanova. They have also been joined by lecturers from other Russian and foreign universities. Since Russia’s repeated invasion of Ukraine, most of the teachers live abroad. The university is registered as a non-governmental organization in Latvia.

Following the announcement, Martinov tweeted that the university would continue operating using safety protocols.
