On Tuesday, the UN General Assembly elected Algeria, South Korea, Guyana, Sierra Leone and Slovenia as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for two years, but rejected Belarus.
Algeria, South Korea, Guyana and Sierra Leone were unopposed in their respective regional groups.
Slovenia and Belarus competed in their regional group, where Slovenia won by a landslide with 153 votes over Belarus, which received only 38 votes.
These five countries will replace Albania, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil, Gabon and Ghana from next year.
The UN Security Council is one of the most important UN bodies. It alone can adopt resolutions binding on member states and send military forces on missions.
The Security Council has a total of 15 members – five permanent members with veto rights and ten non-permanent members, half of which are replaced every year.
The permanent members are the USA, France, Russia, China and Great Britain.
