The White House sharply criticized Brazil on Monday for its President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva’s remarks during a visit to China that the United States was fueling the war in Ukraine.

“In this case, Brazil is parroting Russian and Chinese propaganda, regardless of the facts,” US National Security Council press secretary John Kirby told reporters.

Lula said during a visit to Beijing on Saturday, where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, that “the United States needs to stop promoting war and start talking about peace. The European Union needs to start talking about peace.”

A similar position is often used by Moscow and Beijing, blaming the West for the war that began in February 2022, when Russian troops invaded Ukraine, trying to overthrow the democratically elected government and annex the territories of this country.

Brazil has not joined Western sanctions against Russia and has rejected calls to supply ammunition to Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, starting his trip to Latin America in Brazil on Monday, said that Russia “is grateful to our Brazilian friends for their clear understanding of the situation [Ukrainā] emergence”.

Leftist political veteran Lula wants to portray Brazil as a nonaligned peacemaker, but Kirby described Lula’s message on the war in Ukraine as “deeply problematic.”

Washington has “no objection to any country that wants to try to end the war,” Kirby said.

“We obviously want the war to end. It could happen right now, today, if [Krievijas prezidents Vladimirs] Putin would stop attacking Ukraine and withdraw his troops.”

“Brazil’s recent statements that Ukraine should consider formally handing over Crimea as a concession for peace are deeply misleading, especially for a country like Brazil that has voted [ANO] for supporting the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
