Imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is due to stand trial on extremism charges on Tuesday.
Navalny’s lawyer revealed that the court session will take place in the colony where Navalny is imprisoned.
If convicted, Navalny could face another 30 years in prison.
The 47-year-old Navalny was detained in January 2021, returning from Germany, where he received treatment after a poisoning attempt organized by Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) agents.
In February of the same year, Navalny was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for allegedly violating the terms of the suspended prison sentence he was sentenced to in 2014, while receiving treatment in Germany.
In March of the following year, he was sentenced to another nine years in prison for “fraud” and “contempt of court”.
Now seven more new charges have been brought against Navalny, including for founding and financing an extremist organization. Navalny denies all charges against him.
The European Court of Human Rights will today consider Navalny’s complaint that the Russian authorities did not investigate his poisoning.
Last March, Russia announced its withdrawal from the Council of Europe, which means that Russian citizens can no longer apply to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. Russia decided to withdraw itself from this organization to avoid an embarrassing expulsion for its invasion of Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin also announced that Russia will no longer recognize the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights.
However, the court continues to consider thousands of complaints that have already been filed against Russia.
