The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has detained an Estonian citizen who had bought electronics for the Russian army, “Postimees” newspaper reported on Wednesday.
The FBI’s Houston division announced on social media that in cooperation with the US Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security and the Estonian Security Police Department, a man was arrested who bought US-made electronics for the Russian military.
FBI Houston Division Chief Investigator James Smith said that on March 28, Estonian citizen Andrei Shevlyakov was arrested on suspicion of purchasing US-made electronic equipment, including radar components and hacking software, for the Russian government and military.
“Over many years, Shevlyakov’s well-thought-out network allowed him to purchase sensitive American-made electronic equipment for Russian soldiers. His illegally purchased high-end American technology threatened lives in both Ukraine and the United States,” Smith said.
The announcement states that at the time of the arrest, Shevlyakov had shipments intended for dubious companies, including about 130 kilograms of radio equipment.
If found guilty, Shevlyakov faces up to 20 years in prison.
Shevlyakov was on the U.S. government’s list of banned trade intermediaries, but used dubious companies and fictitious names to circumvent the restrictions.
Smith said the FBI will continue to work with the Estonian Security Police Department to further investigate this case.
