At an event organized by the United States in Brussels, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg added the following to his answer to the question:
I think everyone has realized that becoming a member in the midst of war is not on the agenda. The question is what happens when the war ends.
In our analysis published in April, we dealt in detail with the question of how divisive the issue of Ukraine’s NATO accession is. At that time, we wrote that it is very likely that Ukraine will not be a member of either NATO or the EU until the end of the war, and after that there will be further, long political tug-of-war on the part of the member states regarding the final decision.
